Year one (1) student and nursing mother electrocuted to death by fallen electric pole in Calabar

A 100 level (Year 1) student of Mechanical Engineering of Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH), Inyang David and a nursing mother have lost their life when a high-tension cable fell on top of their building at 14 Adak Uko Street in Calabar on Monday night. Probably they must have been killed by electrocution.

Poor electric cable connection has taken the lives of so many in Nigeria, but it seems that (or rather) the government has chosen to play mute.

According to landlord of the building, Mr Obo who said that the falling cable is common usual thing in the area but falling on the roof is rare.
He said this time was the first time it fell on the roof of twelve tenats, it caused an inferno which took the life of two persons

Mr Obo also said, since the incident took place nobody from the fire service or the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company showed up. Hearing from the friend of the deceased student, Tolale Prince Harmony, he also confirmed that the cable had been falling several times in the past. But when contact are made to the PHEDC office in Calabar they kept referring them to Port Harcourt.

“They keep directing the people to call Port Harcourt. I am wondering, what does Port Harcourt have to do with this? I don’t understand. During the fire, they called the fire service and they said no water, no imprest, nothing to run. I don’t understand this. The cable fell on the building. And caused a fire that killed Inyang David and killed another lady, who just gave birth, and did child dedication just two Sundays ago. Cross River should come into play because it has affected a citizen of the state. The government should do something to ensure its citizens are in good condition.”
Harmony led a protest to the Governor’s Office  on Tuesday lamenting that the deceased was an only child, whose father was late. Special Adviser to the Governor on Student Affairs, Prince Michael Abuo, said the governor is going to ensure the issue is addressed so it does not happen again.
