Heartbreaking news:😢💔 for the Barcelona fans like me.

The Spanish Supreme Court have upheld the decision of a Barcelona court which sentenced Lionel Messi and his father to 21 months in prison for tax fraud.

The Argentina international and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, stood accused of defrauding €4.1m worth of taxes between 2007 and 2009 in the aftermath of failing to pay €10.1m of image rights.

A Barcelona court found him guilty of the offences in 2016 and following an appeal, the Supreme Court have upheld the original decision although the father's sentence was reduced to 15 months following the player returning the amount of money defrauded.

Under Spanish law, unless there are prior offenses, prison sentences of less than two years are often suspended at the discretion of the court, as is expected to be the case here.

“I was dedicated to playing soccer,” Messi had initially told the Barcelona court.

“I trusted my father and the lawyers that we had chosen to deal with our affairs. At no time did I think that they could deceive me.”

The 29-year-old, five-times world player of the year, was found guilty by a Barcelona court last July on three counts of tax fraud between 2007 and 2009, resulting in a suspended 21-month prison sentence and fine of €2million (£1.75m).

Messi's father Jorge was given the same sentence and ordered to pay a fine of €1.5m (£1.3m).

Messi, 29, and his father defrauded the Spanish tax office of almost €4.2m (£3.6m) from 2007-09 by using a web of shell companies to avoid taxes on income from the player's image rights.

So Messi is going to prison for 21 months for tax fraud?
Erm, no. In Spain, any non-violent sentences under two years tend to be suspended, which fits the bill for the Messi case. Any further indiscretions and he will be behind bars but for now he is free to keep on scoring goals.

Fans are saying 'they could not stop him on the pitch so, they decided to take him to court where he has no skill'

i'm on their side on the above statement.
