School Burglar Caught After A Hot Pursuit

A man broke into a South Hampton school Thursday night before engaging police on a pursuit into Massachusetts, police said.

The man was arrested after he was involved in a crash in Merrimac, Massachusetts.
About 8:45 p.m., South Hampton police learned that the Barnard School on Main Avenue had been broken into.

The school principal said the man entered the art and music rooms and took some supplies and a boom box. He said that it appears the man entered the school twice.

A janitor said he heard a noise and found a window that had been broken with a rock. He also spotted the man inside the building and called police.

When officers approached the man about 9 p.m., he fled before getting into a vehicle nearby and drove off south into Massachusetts.

Police in Amesbury, Massachusetts, were alerted and they pursued the man until he finally crashed in Merrimac.

The man’s name has not been released.

The Barnard School’s principal said the school was open as normal Friday and sustained minimal damage. The principal said there was no threat to students.

All stolen items have been recovered, the principal said.
